Mr & Mrs Mohgan Super Crispy Roti Prata @ Tin Yeang Coffeeshop, 300 Joo Chiat Road

Update Mar 2022. Mr & Mrs Mohgan's Super Crispy Roti Prata located at Tin Yeang Restaurant coffeeshop, 300 Joo Chiat Road is the favourite prata of many Singaporeans. Mr Mohgan passed on in Mar 2022 and the stall is now run by Mrs Mohgan with helpers. Fans of the well loved roti prata stall rallied around Mrs Mohgan and continue to support their favourite prata stall.

It was a quiet Monday morning in a peaceful, laid back backstreet neighbourhood like 1960s Singapore. At this hour, we didn't have to queue for our seats or pratas 😄 (Known as roti Canai in Malaysia.)

Like most things in life, I like my roti prata plain, simple, understated.

Kosong.

Emptiness.

Happiness.

The bread was quite thin with not many folds, so there wasn't much fluffiness. But, it was light, flaky and very crispy. The outer fold looked almost like the glazy layer of caramelised sugar on a crème brûlée 😜

Good sized, crispy, nicely browned prata with onion filling.

The crispy bread complements the juicy soft crunch of the chopped onions well. I like the cut green chili pepper which adds a slight spicy kick to the prata. We liked this version the best.

The crispy prata with sliced mushrooms between the folds.

The same signature crispness but the mushrooms came from a tin can so it didn't really worked for me 😜

There is dhal, mutton, chicken and fish curries.

We were served only fish curry which we liked. The dipping curry with good creamy body was a good balance of mildly spicy, sweet and savoury flavours with hints of tanginess.

Friendly Mr Mohgan kneads and flips the dough himself on his small work top at the stall.

Not too much oil in the sizzle, so Mr Mohgan's crispy pratas aren't overly greasy.

Mr and Mrs Mohgan's Super Crispy Roti Prata is tucked inside old Poh Ho corner coffee shop 寶和餐室 at the junction of Onan Road and Crane Road.

It was a Monday morning but the sky was filled with dark clouds and thunder was heard in the distance. As we were exploring the Joo Chiat area for food on foot, we bid Mr. Mohgan a quick good bye. We wanted to take cover at Haig Road food centre before we were trapped by the rain (which eventually came).

I promised Mr. Mohgan that I'll be back (as I hope to learn more about Mr Mohgan and his famous crispy pratas).

Meanwhile, do check out Mr Mrs Mohgan's stall if you like crispy pratas. I can eat this everyday, if I live nearby.
